README.TXT May 22, 2017 This file was updated for issue with Jaspell Jaldi Version 9.0.0 for Multiple Asian and Roman Scripts ----------------------- ********************************* * * * INITIAL PROCEDURES AND ALERTS * * * ********************************* *1 Read this document pertaining to Jaldi09, Jaspell Jaldi Multilingual Word Processor. *2 Follow the instructions shown below on: - Removal of old programmes and fonts; - Installation of the Jaldi programme; - Installation and initialisation of the fonts. *3 The use of this software is now free - no activation codes or dongles! The programme starts by asking for a Password. Choose one from the list provided there in the dialogue box. Otherwise, you can type in the password later by going to Menu Help | Password. *4 Until you type in a password, you will not be able to print more than about half of a page at a time. Also, copying, pasting, merging, and exporting will be prevented. However, all features of multilingual document construction will be available immediately to enable you to become accustomed to their use quickly. This does not affect the use of Jaspell's many tools for learning languages and their scripts. *5 Further help can be found at www.jaspell.uk. ----------------------- ***************************************** * * * DONGLE DEVICE AND DRIVER DISCONTINUED * * * ***************************************** A dongle and driver "dk2wn3264.exe" (32- OR 64-BIT) ARE NO LONGER REQUIRED. ----------------------- ******************************************** * * * USE ON 32-BIT AND 64-BIT WINDOWS SYSTEMS * * * ******************************************** This software is developed using 32-bit design tools. However, it can be installed on a 64-bit system. Some of the 32-bit software gets automatically reassigned by a 64-bit system to a Windows\SysWOW64\folder, or similar. ----------------------- ********************************************************* * * * REMOVAL OF PREVIOUS COPIES OF THE PROGRAMME AND FONTS * * * ********************************************************* If you have a previous version of the 32-bit Jaspell Jaldi package (such as jaldi08.exe) or of the fonts (jbengal3, jvienn01, etc), on your system, it is best to remove them before installing the new version. You may wish to copy them into a temporary haven first. ----------------------- REMOVAL OF AN OLD PROGRAMME 1 - Go to Start (From the Windows Desktop screen), 2 - Settings, 3 - Control Panel, 4 - Add/Remove Programmes, and 5 - Select the old package ("Jaspell Jaldi Multilingual") to be removed. (Old documents you have made will be left the way they are in the directories.) ----------------------- CONSERVING A COPY OF OLD FONTS Before removing the fonts the are already installed, it is recommended that you save a copy of them in a separate folder. 1 - Create a new folder, such as ...My Documents\Fonts or Jaspell Fonts, 2 - Go to C:\Windows\Fonts, 3 - Select the fonts in the following list, 4 - Copy these, 5 - Go to your new folder (such as ...My Documents\Fonts), 6 - Paste the copied font files into the new folder. Retain these copies until you are sure that the new fonts have been installed and are behaving as you wish. ----------------------- REMOVAL OF OLD FONTS The fonts needing to be removed correspond to the list of new fonts, as given below. From the Windows Desktop screen 1 - Go to Start, 2 - Settings, 3 - Control Panel, 4 - Fonts, and 5 - Select the old fonts to be removed. ----------------------- ***************************** * * * WHICH SETUP.EXE TO CHOOSE * * "... WITH SOUNDS" or * * "... WITHOUT SOUNDS" ? * * * ***************************** Three options may have been provided in your computer's "Downloads" directory: 1 - "... WITHOUT SOUNDS" (for Jaldi09nos) This is smaller and allows the programme to be installed more quickly. 2 - "... WITH SOUNDS" - (for Jaldi09wisf) This is larger and takes a little more time. It installs numerous sound files in the same process. 3 - NO REFERENCE TO "SOUNDS" This file will have all have all the sound files anyway. All of these setups installs the same word processor programme: word processing does not require the sound features. Perhaps you don't need to deal with the sound files at this stage. This may be because you already have the sound files on your computer, or because you don't intend to use them. If in doubt, we suggest that you may prefer to run:- * downloading: select "jaldi09wisf9_0_0.exe", if the choice is available. Alternatively, if you opted to add the sound files later, add them simply and quickly later:- See below, "HOW TO ADD SOUND FILES LATER". ----------------------- *************************************** * * * INSTALLATION OF THE JALDI PROGRAMME * * * *************************************** *1. Open the relevant sub-folder in your "Downloads" folder. *2. Unzip the transmission file, if necessary. *3. Find setup.exe. If the "Downloads" folder contains more than one setup routine, "browse" to the routine you prefer. For example, if provided, you may choose: a - "... With Sounds\setup.exe", or b - "... Without Sounds\setup.exe" (See below.), or c - If you see no reference to "Sounds", the package includes them anyway. *3. Run setup.exe. a - Double-click on setup.exe, or b - (Alternatively, you can run setup.exe by: clicking on on Start and Run, then browsing to the required location, and selecting "setup.exe".) *4. Choose "OK". *5. Note the name of the application directory: - e.g. "c:\Program Files\Jaspell Multilingual Word Processor" where you install the application programme (e.g. jaldi09.exe). ----------------------- MESSAGES WHILE SETUP.EXE IS RUNNING: An error message may appear on the screen, if you try to install the programme more than once. Windows may find another copy of a file. (This can happen especially with font files.) You may respond so as to replace the existing file with the one on your latest package. Then continue the installation. ----------------------- ********************************* * * * INSTALLATION OF THE NEW FONTS * * * ********************************* If you have the fonts (jbengal3, jvienn01, etc), on your system, it is best to remove them before installing the new files. See above "REMOVAL OF OLD FONTS". When the setup.exe programme runs, it should intall the character fonts into the folder, C:\Windows\Fonts AUTOMATICALLY. If this fails to happen, you may need to install the fonts MANUALLY. ----------------------- LIST OF NEW FONTS The names of the new fonts are:- jaf1nn01.ttf - normal - African (not served by a compilation programme in the word processor, so characters must be "picked" individually.) jaf1nn02.ttf - narrow - " jaf1nn03.ttf - wide - " jbengal3.ttf - normal - Bengali and Assamese jbengal4.ttf - narrow - " jbengal5.ttf - wide - " jdev01.ttf - normal - Devanagari for Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, Sanskrit jdev02.ttf - narrow - " jdev03.ttf - wide - " jguj01.ttf - normal - Gujarati for Gujarati and some forms of Sindhi jguj02.ttf - narrow - " jguj03.ttf - wide - " jgur01.ttf - normal - Gurumukhi for Punjabi jgur02.ttf - narrow - " jgur03.ttf - wide - " jhirag01.ttf - normal - Hira Gana for Japanese phonetic casual form jhirag02.ttf - narrow - " jhirag03.ttf - wide - " jkatak01.ttf - normal - Katakana for Japanese phonetic formal form jkatak02.ttf - narrow - " jkatak03.ttf - wide - " jla1nn01.ttf - normal - Roman for Latin 1 Group jla1nn02.ttf - narrow - " jla1nn03.ttf - wide - " jla2nn01.ttf - normal - Roman for Latin 2 Group jla2nn02.ttf - narrow - " jla2nn03.ttf - wide - " jla3nn01.ttf - normal - Roman for Latin 3 Group jla3nn02.ttf - narrow - " jla3nn03.ttf - wide - " jla4nn01.ttf - normal - Roman for Latin 4 Group jla4nn02.ttf - narrow - " jla4nn03.ttf - wide - " jnaskh04.ttf - normal - Naskh horizontal form for Arabic, Persian, Pushtu, Urdu jnaskh05.ttf - narrow - " jnaskh06.ttf - wide - " jnaskh07.ttf - very narrow " jnasta04.ttf - normal - Nastaliq cursive form for Arabic, Persian, Pushtu, Urdu jnasta05.ttf - narrow - " jnasta06.ttf - wide - " jnasta07.ttf - very narrow " jpinnn01.ttf - normal - "Roman for Latin 6": Mandarin Chinese Pinyin jpinnn02.ttf - narrow - " jpinnn03.ttf - wide - " jromaj01.ttf - normal - Romaji for Japanese Roman form jromaj02.ttf - narrow - " jromaj03.ttf - wide - " jvienn01.ttf - normal - "Roman for Latin 5": Vietnamese jvienn02.ttf - narrow - " jvienn03.ttf - wide - " ----------------------- INITIALISATION OF THE FONTS: The fonts should get installed automatically when you run the main setup programme. Evidently a few computer setups of Windows configurations do not do this automatically. The effect of this is that, when you run the Jaspell Jaldi Word Processor for the first time, you CANNOT SEE THE FOREIGN FONTS appear on the screen, and Windows replaces them temporarily with some other fonts like Wingdings or a system font. However, to ensure that they get initialised BEFORE YOU RUN THE JALDI PROGRAMME for the first time, we recommend that you:- Go Start, settings, Control Panel, Fonts. When this part of Windows opens, it should activate the new fonts and register them, even if this did not happen before. Alternatively, if the fonts seem to behave strangely when you run the new word processing programme, it may be because of a conflict with previous fonts which were not properly removed before you tried installing the new package. See above concerning how to remove the old fonts, and which ones are involved. See above at "REMOVAL OF OLD FONTS". ----------------------- DOWNLOAD THE FONTS ONLY, IF AUTOMATIC INSTALLATION OF FONTS FAILS With Windows8 or higher computers, you may need to download the fonts. Go to www.jaspell.uk, Click on step2_checkfonts.htm, or downloadmultiwp.htm Find www.jaspell.uk/fonts/jaspellfontpaster.exe, Download jaspellfontpaster.exe to your chosen "Downloads" directory, Run jaspellfontpaster.exe. ----------------------- MANUAL INSTALLATION OF THE DOWNLOADED FONTS: The new fonts can be installed again manually from your chosen "Downloads" directory. Go to Start (from the Windows Desktop screen) Settings Control Panel Fonts Install New Fonts Point to the location where you have saved your new fonts (such as C:\My Documents\Downloads\Fonts) Select the new fonts to be manually installed (from the list of fonts this Windows routine automatically lists). ----------------------- ********************************* * * * LATER INSTALLATION OF SOUNDS * * * ********************************* if you opted to add the sound files later, add them simply and quickly later:- downloading: select to download the sounds with "wavfiles.exe". The target on your hard disk for the "JWav1" directory could, for example, be under "C:\", thus placing your ".wav" files in a folder "C:\jwav1". You may alternatively use a different location for the sound file folder "\jwav1", such as your application directory - which might make "C:\Program Files\Jaspell Multilingual Word Processor\jwav1". With Windows8 or higher computers, you may need to download the fonts. Go to www.jaspell.uk, Click on downloadmultiwp.htm, or Find www.jaspell.uk/downloadsounds.exe, Download downloadsounds.exe to your chosen "Downloads" directory, Run downloadsounds.exe, This will provide you with "wavfiles.exe", Run "wavfiles.exe", Install your soundfiles into your chosen target folder. The target on your hard disk for the "JWav1" folder could, for example, be under "C:\", thus placing your ".wav" files in a folder "C:\jwav1". You may alternatively use a different location for the sound file folder "\jwav1", such as your application folder - which might make "C:\Program Files\Jaspell Multilingual Word Processor\jwav1". ----------------------- *************** * * * HELP SYSTEM * * * *************** HELP SYSTEM: Jaldi09.chm is an HTML-based Help file. You can open the file yourself, or let it open automatically when you highlight a menu feature or go to Menu Help or click on [?]. Help is thus available while you are using the Jaldi program. It explains what you should do. This file has been provided in your download folder. The help file gets installed in the application directory along with the programme. ------------------------ ********************************* * * * INITIAL PROCEDURES AND ALERTS * * * ********************************* TUITION ON THE DOWNLOADED FILE PACKAGE: Various tools created by Jaspell have been provided in your download folder to help you learn to read and write - and to type - some of the languages covered by the word processing programme. These ".exe" programmes can be run without any Jaspell word processor programme having been installed on your computer. However, some of these tools may require you already to have installed the necessary Jaspell foreign language fonts. The fonts can be installed individually onto your computer from your download folder. See above, "DOWNLOADING THE FONTS ONLY". ----------------------- ****************** * * * GENERAL ALERTS * * * ****************** NOTE/CAUTION ABOUT SOFTWARE VERSIONS AND FONT VARIATION: More detailed explanation and advice is in the Help File Jaldi09.chm on updating documents that were constructed with older fonts from before Windows 95. This 32-bit (Jaldi09) version is for Windows 95 and later, as well as for 64-bit Windows systems like Windows 7. It uses Jaspell's Version 2 fonts. Version 1 fonts were "Symbol" type fonts. Windows 98 2nd Edition changed the way Windows handles fonts. Jaspell decided to modify their fonts and correspondingly their 32-bit programme. This is for compatibility across Windows platforms and different versions of Jaldi software including the 16-bit version used since 1995. RTF documents made with Jaldi 5 and using its associated (Version 2) fonts can be opened consistently across Windows 95 and higher packages using appropriate versions of Jaldi. Jaldi 7 will not open on 64-bit Windows systems, such as Windows 7 (unless you construct a Windows "Virtual XP Mode" area on your drive). Jaldi08 (issued in 2013) and Jaldi09 (issued in 2015) are still 32-bit software programs, but were been configured to work fully on Windows 7 and higher 64-bit systems. ------------------------ QUESTIONS: *1. If Error Message 380 is encountered with versions before 5.0.7, it may be because you are trying to run it on a new computer that is not fully set up. For example, if the programme searches for printer settings, but you have no printer installed, then it could not find any settings. Version 5.0.7 is intended to resume working without crashing, even if a printer is not found. *2. If you have your Windows set up so that (in Explorer, for example) the filename extensions such as ".INI" or ".PAR" are hidden, the programme may go looking for certain files with their extension, but not be able to find them. Try changing your Windows settings to show these extensions. *3. If you wish, use the facility in Menu Format: "Keep Methods" to save some of the features that you use most frequently. ------------------------ ADDITIONS IN THE RECENT VERSIONS AND COVERED IN THE HELP FILE (Jaldi08.chm & jaldi09.chm) * Print a short sample (- click on Menu | File) * Print uncollated (- click on Menu | File) * Export documents in PDF and PDF/A secure formats (- click on Menu | File) * Change length of file name displayed in Files Most Recently Used List (- Menu | File | Change filename display) * Vertical Ruler (- click on Menu | View) * Insert and Format Images, OLE Objects and Text Boxes (- click on Menu | Insert or Menu | Format) * Bullets and Numbering (- click on Menu | Format) * Style Patterns (- click on Menu | Format) * Manipulate Table columns (- click on Menu | Table) * Word Count (- click on Menu | Tools) * How to use Mandarin Chinese Pinyin (- click on Menu | Mode) * Reset Base Fonts quicker (- click on Menu | Key) * Naskh and Nastaliq very narrow fonts * Jaldi08.chm HTML-based context-linked Help File (- click on Menu | Help) * [Superseded in v9] In version 8.0.2, registration avoided setting and retrieving Jaldi08 details in the Windows Registry. * Jaldi09.chm HTML-based context-linked Help File (- click on Menu | Help) * In version 9.0.0, the registration process is replaced by a Password procedure (- click on Menu | Help | Password) ----------------------- ******************** * * * SOFTWARE UPDATES * * * ******************** Updates of the programme, fonts, and sounds can be downloaded from www.jaspell.uk.
